Fight Results From Clash at the Kilt 2
October 18th, 2011
The first fight was a Muay Thai fight between Dennis Sherman and Axel Mendez (Carlson Gracie). In the first round it appeared that Sherman tried to complain to referee Jay Estrada about a low knee, however there wasn't any way Estrada could of seen it if it did land. Mendez unloaded with a flurry of punches and landed a nice head kick sending Sherman to the ground. Estrada stopped the contest and it was a good showing by Mendez.
The second fight was also a Muay Thai contest between Joe Cox (St Louis,MO) against Chicago's Beltran Deblanes. Joe Cox was the crisper striker of the two winning all three rounds and appeared to have a good strategy of starting and closing each round with aggressive striking to take home the victory.
A ladies Muay Thai match was next with Gary, Indiana's Katie Fry (Addiction MMA) squaring off with Carlson Gracie Fighter Dorothy Schultz. When Schultz came out and refused to don the headgear, I had that feeling that it wasn't going to go well for Fry which is exactly what happened. Schultz was more aggressive, was in better physical condition and was just simply a better fighter on this night. Schultz worked knees in the clinch and then let her hands go, overwhelming Fry, who waived off the fight not wanting to continue.
The final Muay Thai match of the night was between Chicago fighter Marcus Hall and Daniel McDonald, who came all the way from California to participate in the nights event. Marcus Hall started strong but it soon appeared that he was more of a brawler than a technical Muay Thai Fighter. At first this seemed to confuse McDonald but the young fighter remained calm and started to take over the fight. It was evident that McDonald was the better trained and skilled Muay Thai fighter as he sent Davis to the canvas with a knee to the body in the first round. The second round was more of the same as McDonald picked away at Hall and then finished his opponent near the end of the second round.
The first MMA bout on the card was between Coalition MMA's AJ Masters facing MMA Underground's Edgar Flores. Both fighters met in the center of the cage and after some squaring off Flores missed and slipped on a head kick but he was quickly back to his feet. Masters landed a wild right that briefly stunned Flores causing Flores to shoot for a takedown. Masters tried to lock in a guillotine but couldn't finish as Flores escaped. Flores took Masters back and punched away landing several body shots and the fight was stopped giving Flores the victory.
Victor Rodriguez (MMA Underground) avoided an early takedown attempt by John Dodd and landed some nice knees to the body before sending Dodd to the canvas. Rodriguez capitalized and attacked and finished Dodd with strikes just 29 seconds into the first round. Impressive decisive victory for Rodriguez who looked great in the fight.
The next bout offered Collation MMA's Mike Dombrowski and Carlson Gracie's Matt Shapiro. Dombrowski unsuccessfully tried a takedown and Shapiro sprawled and went to work landing knees to the body, shifting from the right to left side of Dombrowski causing damage with each crushing knee. Shapiro then started dropping punches on Dombrowski causing referee Jay Estrada to stop the fight in the first round.
Crowd favorite Dylan Kowalski (MMA Underground) was victorious over Frank Dodd. Kowalski took Dodd's back and defeated his opponent with a rear naked choke.
The Clash at the Kilt 2 took place at the Tilted Kilt in Elgin on Friday night. The card consisted of Muay Thai fights as well as two titles were on the line. The first being the Cutthroat Middleweight Muay Thai Championship, between Quinton O'Brien and Mike Reid of Carlson Gracie. O'Brien (Vaghi Martial Arts ) who is from St Louis, Missouri is a 3 time Thai Boxing Association Champion and at the age of 29 had the edge in experience over Reid. Reid, the 17 year old phenom looked to get some closure by defeating O'Brien. The two were poised to meet each other at the TBA's, however a judge's decision prevented that from happening. Reed came out and dominated the fight using his hands considerably more than O'Brien. Reid landed combinations stunning O'Brien and then sent him to the canvas with a spinning back fist, referee Jay Estrada halted the action at 1:54 in the first round. Every time I have seen Reid fight, he gets more impressive with his skills. In the post interview Reid stated that he would like to have a couple more amateur bouts before turning pro. I don't know how many fighters will be lining up to face Reid but the sky is the limit for this young fighter!
In the Main event it was the Middleweight MMA Championship on the line with the House of Martial Arts David "Baby Ruth" Booth taking on Carlson Gracie's Sam Ferguson. Booth, who is having his first fight since defeating Bill Johnson, dropped down from Heavyweight to Middleweight in an effort to become the first Cutthroat fighter to capture 2 Cutthroat titles in two different weight classes. Ferguson looked to get his first taste of Cutthroat gold as he took on Booth. The first round went to Ferguson as he was able to take down Booth, Booth tried to work submissions off his back but Ferguson thwarted all his attempts and managed to land some punches and held the top position as the first round closed. The second round saw Booth working his hands more, taking the edge in the striking and avoiding the takedowns of Ferguson. However in what would be a pivotal point in the fight, Ferguson was deducted a point for an illegal knee to the head. With the point deduction and the second round going to Booth, this gave Booth a 10-8 round and gave him a 19-18 edge going into the last round. The third round saw Booth start with a combination but Ferguson took him down and controlled most of the round in the top position. After the fighters were put back to their feet, Ferguson once again went for the takedown and Booth tried for the guillotine and pulled guard but Ferguson popped out and finished the round with a couple hammer fists to capture the round. With the fight going to the judges, it appeared obvious that the outcome was going to be a draw. Both fighters were disappointed in the outcome but appear poised for a rematch in a 5 round battle that should provide a clear cut winner.
